Field visits:
One wetland survey cum bird watching trip and a field visit to Rajaji National Park have also been conducted under this programme. The wetland survey was conducted for the Welham Boys School and an article on this survey was published in the magazine “Geography and You”. The Rajaji Visit was conducted for selected 25 students from different schools. In this visit, student interacted with local school students and tried to understand the Government’s efforts to promote local participation in forest management. Forest Officials also took part in this visit and Mr. G.P. Pandey, Activities at Dehradun Warden explained the importance of forests in maintaining the biogeochemical cycle. He briefed the students about Conservation Parks , Biosphere Reserves and National Park. schools.
Other activities:
Environment Day- A conservation march was also organized on Environment Day. WWF also organized a bird watching competition for five schools in Rajaji National Park. The competing teams were tasked to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of birds in
their designated transect within two hours. Students showed great enthusiasm in learning bird watching techniques. Some schools are planning to start nature clubs in their schools after the YCS workshop. Some lectures are being organized for students of Welham Boys School and Asian School under the YCS programme. Painting and short essay writing competitions as well as cultural activities were also organized at different schools.
Achievements :
One of YCS participant school (Asian School) has started Nature Club in their school. WWF-India Field office is assisting them for the same. Welham Boys and Welham Girls’ school has declared this year as “Environment Year”. They have also banned polythene on their premises. Five more schools have shown their interest in Young Climate Savers Programme. One article related to this programme has been published in “Geography and You” magazine. Print and visual media has already published or broadcasted some of these programmes in local channels and newspapers.
