Young Climate Savers

About Young Climate Savers

WWF-India, in realization of its vision of containing climate change to below 2 degrees C above pre industrial levels, has constantly sought to explore strategies in which education could be used to influence people’s behavior, attitudes towards consumption and general lifestyles, in order to convert them to sustainable and low carbon lifestyles. WWF-India has realized the significance of primarily educating children about the causes and impacts of climate change, not just to encourage their role in emission reduction, but also to help them prepare themselves to adapt to and live with the future impacts of climate change.

In fulfilling this endeavor, WWF-India has partnered with Tetra Pak in undertaking the Young Climate Savers program. Tetra Pak is a leading food processing and beverage carton manufacturing company, which has several innovations on food processing technology and excellent environmental performance to its credit. Tetra Pak conducts its operations in an environmentally sustainable manner, and adheres to the principles of renewability, recycling and energy conservation. Following up on its commitment to contributing to reducing emissions, and realizing the importance of educating children on climate change, Tetra Pak partnered with WWF-India in 2008 for the Young Climate Savers program.

The YCS program goes through a year long period of implementation, beginning with a WWF-India education officer orientation program. This is followed by city level teacher training workshops for teachers of the twenty schools selected in each city. Following this, WWF staffs deliver two presentations in all twenty schools, with an interim period of two months, during which students are asked to take actions to reduce their emissions. The performance of each of the schools and knowledge of students on climate change is assessed during the second visit. The YCS program for the year concludes with an inter school competition on climate change, during which schools highlight and exhibit their activities on climate change and their results in reducing emissions from the school.
