Young Climate Savers

Why Children should join YCS?

Youth and children aged below 25 constitute close to three quarters of the population of our country. Adapting to the impacts of climate change and mitigating potential effects will be a burden and an unwelcome obligation of the young generation.

The international community is therefore negotiating to secure the future of the next generation. It is now essential that children are educated sufficiently on the various facets of climate change, especially about measures they can take to reduce emissions.

Children have a great potential for contributing significantly to solving the climate crisis and transitioning to a low carbon economy. They can achieve this by making minute adjustments to their lifestyles which will accumulate and result in substantial reductions in emissions, thereby becoming Young Climate Savers.

The YCS program provides a unique opportunity for children to learn more about these simple yet effective lifestyle changes that can avert the bleak future of the planet.

School level activities disseminated by the YCS program and explained in the teacher’s manual are designed to sensitize children on their role in causing emissions and opportunities to remedy climate change.

Enacting these activities gives students a unique opportunity to understand the reality and gravity of climate change, and to act on their knowledge. Furthermore, the YCS program, through its pan Indian scale and mutual interface through competitions, also enables children to learn from each other’s experiences and understand mitigation measures in a variety of scenarios.

These novel ideas can be replicated across multiple schools, institutions and communities across the country, therefore amplifying the impact by the children of the YCS programme.
