Young Climate Savers

How could teachers play a role?

The Young Climate Savers program offers students and teachers alike a unique opportunity to educate themselves about climate change and to contribute positively and meaningfully to actions aimed at mitigating global warming.

Through their involvement in the program, teachers are presented with the opportunity to learn and understand the latest science of climate change impacts and necessary remedial steps from trained educators. This empowers teachers to become climate change communicators, which coupled with their experience in education and expertise with various pedagogic techniques, it allows them to clearly and effectively communicate the issue of climate change in a cogent and comprehensible manner to their students.

The level of comprehension a student has over the challenge of climate change, and consequently the quality and frequency of their actions depends a lot on the instruction given by the teachers. The messages delivered and actions undertaken by teachers will have a lasting impact on students and through them the larger society, changing the mindsets of producers and consumers alike.

This makes teachers extremely important stakeholders in the YCS program and they have a clear and pivotal role as climate messengers. Their potential contribution in combating climate change through education and communication is undoubtedly enormous and immeasurable.
It is pertinent for teachers to equip themselves with accurate and up to date information to communicate to their students. The quality of messages passed on to their students will be greatly reflected in the role that their students embrace, either as perpetrators of a climate crisis or as protectors of the climate.
