What is my watt reading
For the Science and Mathematics Teachers
ACTIVITY PLAN:
• Give them a brief explanation on what wattage is and bring out the fact that an appliance’s wattage is an indicator of how much electricity is used while operating the appliance
• An appliance requiring 1,000 watts would use one kilowatt-hour of electricity during one hour of its working.
• Eg a geyser using 1500 watts if we divide by 1000 we get 1.5 kilowatts and if this is then multiplied by the number of hours we get the power consumption in kilowatt hours For two hours it is the 1.5 X 2 = 3 kwH
• If 1 kilowatt hour is one unit of electricity and it costs Rs 10 then the cost of running the geyser for two hours is Rs 30
Each student can be given 4 appliances from the list enclosed
This would then help the student to limit the use of appliances to conserve energy
